PUTRAJAYA: The Auditor-General wants all government department heads to get tough on the mismanagement of government spending.
Tan Sri Ambrin Buang said his annual audit of the public sector would be meaningless if no action was taken to rectify the shortcomings.
"Some may feel that there is no point in the A-G preparing a report when at the end of the day, nothing happens," Ambrin said in his keynote address at the 14th Perdana Discourse Series organised by the Perdana Leadership Foundation and Universiti Teknologi Mara here Wednesday.
He was addressing some 250 people in the talk entitled "Enhancing Accountability and Integrity in the Malaysian Public Sector Are We Doing Enough?"
He said his office, manned by some 2,000 auditing and support staff, faced resource constraints. Hence, credible internal audits were needed to complement the A-G office's efforts.
However, he noted that auditors were not the only ones responsible for enhancing accountability and integrity in the public sector.
"Members of the administration, heads of ministries, chief executive officers of statutory bodies, Parliament and the state legislature, the media and the larger civil society, too, have and should play their roles," Ambrin said.
